What is surprising about the terroir of Châteauneuf du Pape is its aridity and the North wind called mistral which blows there more than a hundred and thirty days a year.

Thanks to this wind the Châteauneuf du Pape gets a lot of sunshine : 2,800 hours a year, and it quicky eclipses the negative effects of the rain, hence preventing the vines from a number of illnesses. It is an extraordinary healing substance which freshens the climate in the summertime and allows the grapes to reach a good concentration without being burnt.
This microclimate, along with a range of localities, produces wines that are warm and deep. They require a few years to give off all the subtlety and richness of their aromas.
The Châteauneuf du Pape permits 13 different varieties of grapes : grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, cinsault, vaccarèse, counoise, muscardin, picpoul, terret noir, roussanne, clairette, bourboulenc and picardan.
Châteauneuf du Pape is also the French appellation with the lowest authorized yield (35hl/ha), Grapes must be picked by hand and systematically chosen.
This is for all these reasons, to name but a few, that the Châteauneuf du Pape is an exceptional appellation
